Advancing Human Rights Research in Armenia: Insights from the Second International Conference in Yerevan

On December 3–4, 2024, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) and the American University of Armenia (AUA) co-hosted the Second International Conference on Human Rights Research in Yerevan. This annual event brought together 75 participants, including academics, policymakers, civil society representatives, and international development partners, to jointly discuss current and emerging human rights issues while fostering opportunities for cross-sectoral collaboration.

As a keystone of RWI’s Armenia Programme (2022–2025), the conference aimed at enhancing the quality of human rights research and encouraging practical applications for policy and advocacy in Armenia. With sessions on topics such as conflict resolution, environmental justice, and access to education, the event provided a comprehensive platform for participants to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and chart a course for strengthening human rights in Armenia.

A Platform for Dialogue and Solutions

The conference opened with remarks from Dr. Hagop A. Yacoubian, Dean of the AUA College of Humanities and Social Sciences (CHSS) and Mr. Klas Waldenström, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Development Cooperation, Swedish Embassy in Armenia. “This conference is a true partnership between AUA and RWI and represents a platform for fostering meaningful dialogue and practical strategies to address Armenia’s human rights challenges,” Dr. Yacoubian stated. Mr. Waldenström added, “Sweden is pleased to support this collaboration in addressing human rights challenges and thereby contribute to strengthening the research and policy interface needed to drive sustainable change.”

The conference agenda included high-level plenary sessions, thematic panels, and interactive workshops designed to encourage interdisciplinary, cross-sectoral, and international dialogue. Sessions explored issues such as gender inequality, corruption, the role of artificial intelligence in human rights, and the impacts of environmental degradation on vulnerable communities. The inclusion of international participants broadened the scope of discussions, offering comparative perspectives and enriching the exchange of ideas.

Inspiration for Research and Policy

One of the conference’s defining features was its focus on actionable outcomes. Participants were encouraged to develop policy recommendations, build collaborative research initiatives, and contribute to conference proceedings, which will be published to amplify the impact of their work. Selected participants will also have the opportunity to apply for a fellowship program jointly offered by RWI and AUA, aimed at providing mentorship and resources to deepen their engagement with human rights research.

For many participants, the conference was a source of both inspiration and connection. As one of the human rights advocates attending the event reflected, “This conference provided an invaluable opportunity to exchange ideas and connect with experts who share a vision of advancing equity and justice in Armenia. It’s empowering to know that these discussions will lead to tangible actions.”

A Path Forward

The outcomes of the conference include not only increased awareness of Armenia’s human rights landscape but also a commitment to fostering collaborative solutions. From addressing the rights of displaced persons in conflict-affected areas to promoting gender equality and digital rights, the event highlighted the potential for research and dialogue to drive meaningful change.

The conference reaffirmed RWI’s dedication to advancing human rights through interdisciplinary research, inclusive dialogue, and sustained partnerships. At the core of the Armenia Programme is RWI’s commitment to supporting the capacity of representatives from the judiciary, state agencies, academia, and civil society to apply international human rights standards in ongoing and future reforms in the country.
