RWI and EALS convened an event under the theme “Strengthening Implementation of Decisions of Regional Court and Supporting Regional Judiciaries for a Greater Role in the Sustainable Development of the EAC” at EALS’ Annual Conference 2024 in Kampala, Uganda. The event brought together legal professionals, state actors, the judiciary, civil society representatives and academics.
The keynote by Prof. Frans Viljoen from the University of Pretoria looked at implementation on decisions from regional human rights bodies in Africa in comparison to the rest of the world. This was followed by discussants from the Attorney General, Judiciary, a practicing advocate and an academic. The event also had presentations from the registries of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the East African Court of Justice. Further look at state and practitioner perspectives on barriers to implementation and the role of national human rights institutions (NHRIs) in supporting implementation.
