Armenia Human Rights Defenders Office Workshop

On December 3-4, 2024, the Human Rights Defender’s staff members in Armenia and RWI Armenia hosted an impactful two-day workshop designed to enhance the competencies of legal professionals in documenting cases of torture and ill-treatment.

Participants gained:

  • Expertise in identifying common practices of torture and ill-treatment.
  • Insightful knowledge of Armenian and international legal definitions of torture, inhuman, and degrading treatment, with a focus on the Istanbul Protocol.
  • Guidance on interpreting and applying these principles in real-world documentation efforts.

Expert trainers Mr. Ergun Cakal, Ms. Laura Gasparyan, Ms. Anna Margaryan, and Mr. Davit Gevorgyan, shared their expertise from legal, medical, theoretical, and psychological perspectives. RWI’s Access to Justice and Rule of Law thematic lead, Mr. Josh Ounsted, facilitated the discussions.

The workshop also included injury visualization activities, helping participants better understand and recognize the physical consequences of torture.
