Irene Khan, Director-General of the International Development Law Organisation (IDLO), will discuss how the rule of law is crucial and relevant to the economic, social and environmental dimensions of development laid out in the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals on January 26.
On 25 September 2015, world leaders adopted what is arguably the most ambitious global development program ever: 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Comprising 17 universally applicable Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) covering a comprehensive range of economic, social, and environmental priorities, the Agenda seeks to align the objectives of eradicating poverty and reducing inequality among present generations with the objective of preserving fragile ecosystems and limited natural resources for future generations.
Khan says a distinct feature of the 2030 Agenda is the acknowledgement of access to justice and the rule of law as outcomes and enablers of sustainable development, explicitly in SDG 16 and implicitly in various other goals and targets across the entire Agenda.
In her address Khan will discuss the importance as well as opportunities and challenges of promoting the rule of law as an essential component of sustainable development.
