Meet Ms Phearong Sdeung – Working on Issues Related to Women’s Rights

Empowering youth and working on issues relating to women’s rights are the passions Ms. Phearong Sdeung, the Executive Director of the Banteay Srei NGO, holds onto.

It was the RWI’s scholarship for the studies of International Human Rights Law at the Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia that triggered and sharpened her interest in the human rights issues in Cambodia. Specifically, she learned much about the CEDAW conventions and women’s rights in research studies.

“With the human rights lens, I clearly see a need for improvement and implementation of the legal framework. Therefore, I decided to work with Banteay Srei since its mandate is what she is looking for” she says.

To her, giving back to the community has a huge impact, especially on women’s rights and gender equality. For Phearong human rights knowledge is an indispensable key to unlocking the societal barrier not only for her individually but for all Cambodian women.

In Cambodia, we focus on supporting the young generation, the future decision-makers who are expected to take on leadership roles in businesses, politics, and government in the years to come. Collaboration with academic institutions, research centers, and judicial training institutes is important to accomplishing this goal.
