At the end of 2012, Raoul Wallenberg Institute signed a four year capacity development project with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency focusing on developing the capacity of the newly established Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (‘MNHRC’). The first activity under the project is a training workshop on Business and Human Rights which was held from 28th – 29th January 2013 in Inya Lake Hotel, Yangon, Myanmar. Commissioners from the MNHRC attended along with representatives of the business community and government agency representatives with business related responsibilities. The training was well received and appreciated by all parties as there has not been a human rights focused approach geared towards the business community thus far. It is also timely as Myanmar is going through rapid changes in business and economic developments and thus important for all stakeholders to understand the human rights impact that its activities can have towards individuals, communities and the country as a whole.
