Professor Axel Marx, of the University of Leuven, will be visiting the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in a collaborative event with the Lund University School of Economics and Management on September 27th.

This lecture will be commented by Jörgen Hettne, Director of the Centre for European Studies at Lund University and Senior Researcher at the Swedish Institute for European Policy Studies, who will also share his knowledge and insights. While, Radu Mares, RWI’s Associate Professor and Team leader of Economic Globalisation and Human Rights, will be moderating.

International trade liberalization is increasing the pressure on states to pursuit competitive advantage, causing the protection of human rights to be overlooked. In response, the EU is attempting to promote human rights, the rule of law and democracy by integrating human rights provisions in its unilateral (GSP) and bilateral (trade agreements) trade policies.

In this lecture, Professor Marx will be introducing the EU’s approach towards integrating human rights provisions to trade policy. He will also assess whether the current approach is working and reflect on possible changes to be made to the current approach.
