30 years of Cooperation

Over the past 30 years, RWI has regularly delivered projects with National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs). Over this period, RWI has worked with more than 50 countries towards the establishment and strengthening of NHRIs. RWI’s model involves doing an assessment of the capacity needs of each NHRI and the implementation of tailored programmes to achieve greater compliance with the Paris Principles. We also work closely with establish NHRIs on projects to promote and protect human rights across our thematic focal areas. For more information on our current cooperation with NHRIs, click here.

RWI has worked with the following countries towards the establishment or strengthening of NHRIs. 

Previous Cooperations

In Sub-Saharan Africa, RWI has supported a broad range of efforts to establish, strengthen, and enhance the work of NHRIs in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

In the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, RWI has collaborated on capacity building and development initiatives with the NHRIs in Jordan, Morocco, and the Palestinian Territory.

In the Americas, RWI’s cooperation with NHRIs primarily has focused on regional programmes involving institutions in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

In the Asia-Pacific region, RWI has engaged in a wide range of cooperation activities aimed at supporting the establishment, development, and strengthening of NHRIs across several countries, including Afghanistan, Cambodia, China, Timor Leste, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, The Maldives, Mongolia, Nepal, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In Central Asia, cooperation has focused mainly on knowledge exchange and strengthening capacities through educational and training programmes with NHRIs in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.

In Europe, RWI’s collaboration with NHRIs has largely consisted of tailored activities designed to meet each institution's specific needs and priorities across Azerbaijan, Armenia, Georgia, North Macedonia, Sweden, Türkiye, and Ukraine.
