RWI Director Morten Kjaerum joins the likes of Tawakkol Karman, winner of the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize, and Adama Dieng, UN’s Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide, as a contributing author to the current issue of the UN Chronicle. The UN Chronicle is a magazine that covers information as well as debates on the activities of the United Nations system and acts as an important tool for the dissemination of human rights knowledge.
The current issue commemorates the fiftieth anniversary of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, both adopted by the UN in 1966. The articles cover everything from the UN’s responsibility to protect vulnerable populations from genocide to how to ensure the rights of women after the Arab Spring.
Kjaerum’s article, titled “From International Law to Local Communities: The Role of the United Nations in the Realization of Human Rights”, – examines the influence of the Covenants in strengthening the protection of human rights. It envisions a path forward at a time when the human rights regime is under attack.
“The system that has been so important in strengthening the protection of human rights over the course of 50 years needs to adapt to face current challenges. In this regard it is important to join the efforts and strengthen the dialogue and collaboration between various organizations,” Kjaerum writes.
