January 17: Light a Candle in Honour of Raoul Wallenberg

ljusforraoulJanuary 17, 2015 marked 70 years since Raoul Wallenberg’s disappearance. This Sunday at 16:30, a ceremony will be held at Raoul Wallenberg Square in Stockholm, Sweden in honour of Raoul Wallenberg, the Swedish diplomat who rescued thousands of Hungarian Jews from deportation during World War II.

Nina Lagergren, Raoul Wallenberg’s sister, as well as Michael Wernstedt, a relative to Wallenberg and the head of the Raoul Wallenberg Academy, will speak about how we can live up to Wallenberg’s deeds today.

A digital show of support will also be led on twitter under the hashtag #ljusförRaoul/ #candleforRaoul.

In addition, the Army Museum in Stockholm will show an exhibition of Raoul Wallenberg’s room and host a discussion with this year’s Raoul Wallenberg Prize winners, Hédi Fried and Emrich Roth, both holocaust survivors.
