Write your Thesis in Cambodia about Human Rights and Labour Standards

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law office in Cambodia, hereby calls for applications from law/labour law/human rights law students at Lund University who will write their graduation thesis during spring 2016. Students who wish to write their thesis on the general topic “Human Rights and Labour Standards” with a specific case study on Cambodia are welcome to apply. Research questions might relate to:

  • Promoting human rights through industrial relations
  • Equal treatment and non‐discrimination
  • Fair remuneration, minimum wage or forced labour
  • Health and Safety at Work

The successful applicant will be expected to spend 8‐10 weeks in Cambodia doing research and collecting information. The student will also be expected to assist the professor teaching the new course “Fundamental Labour Rights” at the Master Programme in International Human Rights Law at Pannasastra University of Cambodia (PUC), including possible co‐teaching. The student will also be encouraged to initiate cooperation with the students at the Master Programme at PUC. Academic supervision or mentorship in Phnom Penh can be provided in both English and Swedish.

The scholarship is set at SEK 27 000 and is a travel grant which may need to be supplemented, for example with student finance. The scholarship recipient will be responsible for planning and implementing the study and must cover all costs related to the stay in Cambodia, incl. travel, accommodation, insurance etc.

  • Curriculum vitae (CV) in English (including information about experience of living/working/studying in
    developing countries)
  • Preliminary title of the thesis and a brief description of the topic and the methodology (max. 2 pages).
  • Motivation letter explaining why you wish to write your thesis about “Human Rights and Labour
    Standards” and why you wish to spend 8‐10 weeks in Cambodia (max. 1 page).
  • Name and contact details of your supervisor (supervisor based in Phnom Penh available upon request)
  • LADOK‐extract showing relevant previous courses and registration at relevant Master Programs (or the
    like) at Lund University
  • Budget (This must include provisional costs for vaccinations, flights, any travel necessary within the
    country/region, accommodation, any costs for equipment, translation, etc.)
  • Personal Bank Account for the eventual deposit of the scholarship to successful applicant.

Selection and decision
In selecting the scholarship recipients, the selection committee will for example take into consideration the quality and relevance of the thesis proposal, academic merits of the applicant, the applicant’s motivation and experience as well as prospect to complete the thesis in in a timely manner. The scholarship cannot be shared between two students. The scholarship committee might wish to hold phone interviews with shortlisted candidates before a final decision is taken. A final decision will be issued at the latest on 21 December 2015.
