Workshop on the Prohibition and Prevention of Torture and ill-Treatment

The Institute, in cooperation with the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, held a training workshop on the Prohibition and Prevention of Torture and ill-Treatment in Nay Pyi Taw, the first RWI workshop to be held in the capital of Myanmar. Participants of the workshop include members from the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC), and representatives from the Home Ministry, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Immigration, Ministry of Social Affairs, the Supreme Court and the Prosecutor General’s office.

Sessions have included an overview of the provisions of the UN Convention Against Torture, the Optional Protocol to the Convention Against Torture as well as the roles of National Human Rights Institutions in relation to the prevention of torture.

This thematic human rights training is the fifth in a series of training workshops which began last year for Commissioners of the MNHRC and relevant government representatives. It is part of RWI’s institutional capacity building programme targeting the MNNRC and its key partners to strengthen their knowledge and capacity in human rights and the roles and functions of National Human Rights Institutions. The programme is managed by the Institute’s thematic unit on National Human Rights Institutions.
