Regional meeting on common judicial standards in the MENA-region

The institute organised a regional meeting in Amman, 21-22 November, on common judicial standards and judicial cooperation in the MENA-region. The Ambassador of Sweden, Charlotta Sparre, attended the meeting and she emphasised that shared knowledge and experiences is important in further enhancing the respect for human rights and in developing best practices. “International, as well as regional, cooperation is an important part of these efforts”, she said in her inaugural speech.

The Meeting gathered the directors of judicial training academies and/or institutes (JTA’s) from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region as well as the respective National Working Groups (NWG). The meeting aimed at evaluating the previous phase of the cooperation with the Institute and agreeing on the way forward.

In addition, this meeting was addressed to formally renew the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that was signed during the high level regional meeting in Amman in 23-24 May 2011, between the Institute and Judicial Training Academies in MENA.

Dr Qaysar Yehya Jaafar – Director general of the Judicial Institute of Iraq, Judge Mansour Hadidi – Director general of the Judicial Institute of Jordan, Judge Assad Mubarak – Director general of the Palestinian Judicial Institute and Rolf Ring – Deputy Director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute signed the renewal of the Memorandum of Understanding.
