On 25 August 2025, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) participated in a strategic dialogue hosted by Sida at its headquarters in Rissne.
Strengthening Legal Institutions and Normative Frameworks
In the discussion, RWI underscored the importance of investing in legal institutions and education as the foundation for protecting human rights and strengthening the rule of law. The dialogue also explored how international norms and standards—including those underpinning human rights and international humanitarian law (IHL)—need renewed focus and practical reinforcement in today’s shifting global landscape.
Addressing Corruption as a Cross-Cutting Challenge
The conversation highlighted the interconnectedness of corruption, governance, and human rights. RWI contributed insights from its global research and practical experience in post-conflict environments, emphasising the importance of cross-sectoral approaches to building integrity, transparency, and public trust.
Examples drawn from RWI’s partnerships, including its Sida- and MFA-supported work in Ukraine, illustrated how institutional resilience and strengthened governance frameworks can help restore confidence and contribute to broader democratic reform.
Elevating International Humanitarian Law (IHL)
With over 125 armed conflicts ongoing globally, participants discussed the importance of integrating IHL into Sweden’s development cooperation strategies. RWI contributed perspectives on capacity-building, monitoring, and education to reinforce IHL compliance, emphasising that respect for IHL is foundational to the protection of other human rights.
RWI as a Trusted Strategic Partner
RWI’s invitation to this dialogue underscores its role as a credible, reliable, and knowledgeable partner to Sida and other governmental actors. Through its research-driven insights, international networks, and capacity-building expertise, RWI remains committed to supporting Sweden’s efforts to advance human rights, democracy, and rule of law globally.
