The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI) welcomed the Ambassador of Indonesia to Sweden, Dr. Yayan Ganda Hayat Mulyana, for a high-level meeting at its headquarters in Lund on 1 September 2025.
RWI and Indonesia have enjoyed more than 17 years of strategic cooperation in the fields of human rights and International Humanitarian Law (IHL). During the meeting, the Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the longstanding partnership, noting that he had learned of RWI’s important global work — and its impact in Indonesia — through Indonesian university students. He also highlighted the valuable connections RWI has built with both Indonesian students and alumni, many of whom have gone on to play important roles in advancing human rights in Indonesia and beyond.
Executive Director Peter Lundberg thanked the Ambassador for the strong and enduring support from Indonesian authorities, particularly the Ministry of Human Rights.
The collaboration in Indonesia has also enabled RWI to build a close relationship with ASEAN, including a unique membership in the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR).
Discussions focused on future areas of cooperation, including strengthening compliance monitoring in the field of International Humanitarian Law. The Ambassador showed great interest in RWI’s newly developed International Humanitarian Law Compliance Monitoring Database (ICMD) — an innovative initiative that uses advanced AI technologies to collect and analyse incidents with IHL implications from armed conflicts worldwide, identifying global trends and patterns in alleged violations.
The meeting also explored opportunities in the area of Business and Human Rights, building on RWI’s previous experience in Indonesia and Cambodia, as well as new, innovative concepts currently being developed in collaboration with government authorities in Türkiye.
As the meeting concluded, both parties reaffirmed their commitment to deepening collaboration in academic human rights and IHL, and to identifying new opportunities to advance this shared agenda on both regional and global levels.
