By: Claudia Ituarte-Lima, Leader of the Human Rights and the Environment Thematic Area

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute was pleased to respond to a call for submission by the United Nations Secretary-General for input on Just Transition and Human Rights, the theme of an upcoming synthesis report on opportunities, best practices, actionable solutions, challenges and barriers relevant to a just transition and the full realization of human rights for all people.

Human Rights Council resolution 56/8 of 10 July 2024 (A/HRC/RES/56/8) entitled “Human rights and climate change” requested the Secretary-General to consult Member States and other relevant stakeholders in order to prepare and submit to the sixtieth session of the Human Rights Council a synthesis report on Just Transition and Human Rights.

This submission, prepared by experts at RWI, showcases challenges, lessons learned and recommendations, as well as specific examples from selected countries and regions of focus for RWI’s work. Authors of this submission are: Dr. Claudia Ituarte-Lima, Alejandra Acosta Jiménez, Windi Arini, Dr. Matthew Scott, Malin Oud, Isis Sartori Reis, and Meline Avagyan.

RWI’s main recommendations to the UN Secretary-General and the global policy community are to:

1) approach just transitions with a broad systemic and preventive perspective that moves beyond a narrow focus on green energy transitions;

2) closely consider the interactions between energy-related just transitions and other sustainability pathways such as food systems transitions; and

3) address the key drivers of unsustainability such as inequality.

All inputs will be soon made available on the website of OHCHR.
