Advanced Detention Monitoring training in Ethiopia

As part of improving detention monitoring practices, the Raoul Wallenberg Institute (RWI) concluded an in-person training on Advanced Detention Monitoring in Bishoftu for the Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC). This training marked the second phase of a blended learning programme — building upon an earlier online course completed by participants. The in-person training offered the participants an opportunity to deepen both knowledge and practical skills.

The training brought together EHRC monitors from across all regions of Ethiopia, united by a shared commitment of upholding human dignity in places often hidden from public view, places of detention. At the heart of this training was the critical role that national human rights institutions play in safeguarding the rights and freedoms of all persons deprived of liberty. Through interactive sessions, scenario,  mock monitoring exercise, peer learning, participants enhanced their capacity to monitor places of detention in line with domestic, regional and international standards. They also gained tools not only for effective monitoring, but for developing their own training programs in the future.

This project is financially supported by the Swedish Institute.

The training was a reminder that strong, independent institutions are the cornerstone of accountability and justice. As a next step, the trained monitors will undertake a series of monitoring exercises in at least 12 places of detention across Ethiopia, further reinforcing their role in protecting the rights of persons in custody.
