This update on the human rights situation in Afghanistan covering the period from October to December 2024 is based on monitoring by UNAMA’s Human Rights Service conducted in accordance with its mandate from the UN Security Council.

As noted in the UNAMA statement on the occasion of Human Rights Day on 10 December 2024: “The human rights record of the de facto authorities has been especially marked by their systemic discrimination against women and girls, who are excluded from most areas of daily and public life, including education and work.” During the reporting period, the de facto authorities imposed further restrictions on the rights of women and girls. (See the Annex to this update for a timeline of decrees and edicts introduced by the de facto authorities since 15 August 2021 which impact women and girls.)
