RWI-UN partnership in support of Surge Initiative

The RWI-UN partnership started in 2021 in support of the Surge Initiative at the OHCHR.

The Surge Initiative brings together economists, development specialists and human rights experts from within the UN system. It aims to accelerate the realization of economic and social rights, creating the conditions to build back better, reduce inequalities and contribute to a human rights-based implementation of the 2030 Agenda.

The new master programs on human rights in economics is one major output of this Partnership.

Collaboration with Business Councils for Sustainable Development in Asia

RWI began collaborations with private sector actors in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand. Priority partners have been Business Councils for Sustainable Development (BCSD) in several Asian countries due to their detailed understanding of country specificities and buy-in from member companies.

Part of RWI program on Human Rights and the Environment, these collaboration promote awareness and capacities to integrate human rights and environmental sustainability in corporate supply chains in a holistic manner.

RWI events and webinars, co-organised with the Malaysia BCSD. Various topics have been covered with expert presentations and panels on topics such as supply chain compliance, Free Trade Agreements, responsible supply chain and technology. Recordings available here.

BHR tools: Training on the use of PRISMA in Indonesia, a human rights self-assessment tool for businesses, together with the Indonesia BCSD. The business platform for human rights and the environment (BHREM), which aims to facilitate knowledge sharing, networking and capacity building for Malaysian Businesses, together with the Malaysia BCSD.

Research: on corporate boards and shareholder litigation in Asia in relation to the climate emergency. A collaboration with the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore will provide the research foundation on which to inform training and advice for businesses and other actors in Asia. The research is expected to be completed in mid 2023.
