In November 2008, the Faculty of International Relations at Belarus State University and the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, supported by the Swedish Embassy in the Republic of Belarus and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belarus, organised a human rights seminar in Belarus for the academic community entitled Implementation of Human Rights in a European Perspective.

Based on that seminar and close discussions with key institutions in Belarus, academic cooperation was initiated in 2010 between the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and Belarusian universities to promote human rights, humanitarian law and gender equality among academia, civil society and government.

The objective of the academic cooperation between the Raoul Wallenberg Institute and Belarusian universities is to develop human rights, humanitarian law and gender equality capacity and resources at Belarus State University and other interested universities in Belarus.

The Institute aims to achieve this by strengthening knowledge of human rights and humanitarian law among university teachers, developing library resources, teaching curricula and scientific research, and supporting exchanges and study visits.

The Institute’s academic cooperation with Belarusian universities is financially supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
