Chris Patten
Lord Chris Pattern studied at Balliol College, University of Oxford. From 1966 to 1979, he made a political career, holding different positions in the Conservative Party, including Director of the Conservative Research Department, the youngest ever appointed.
In 1979, Lord Patten was elected Member of Parliament for Bath, a seat he held until 1992 when he was appointed Governor of Hong Kong. Before that appointment, he had various government posts, such as Minister of State at the Department of Education and Science and Minister for Overseas Development at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. As the last Governor of Hong Kong, Lord Patten was overseeing the return of the British crown colony to China in 1997.
Chris Patten was Chairman of the Independent Commission on Policing for Northern Ireland, set up under the Good Friday Peace Agreement, which submitted its report in 1999.
From 1999 to 2004, Lord Patten was European Commissioner for External Relations in Brussels. In 2005, Chris Patten – Lord Patten of Barnes – took his seat in the House of Lords. Since 2003, he is Chancellor of the University of Oxford.
