Climate Justice & Human Rights: A Submission to the IACHR’s Special Rapporteurship (REDESCA)

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, in partnership with members of The Global Network for Human Rights and the Environment and the Environmental Legal Clinics Alliance in Latin America & the Caribbean, is pleased to present our submission to the Office of the Special Rapporteurship on Economic, Social, Cultural, and Environmental Rights (REDESCA) of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR).

This report responds to REDESCA’s call for:

• Successful experiences and achievements in climate justice and human rights.
• Lessons learned and replicable models to strengthen public policies and collective action.
• Best practices that bridge local realities with international standards.

Key Highlights of the Submission 

Multilevel Approach: Moving beyond top-down implementation, we emphasize learning from local, national, and transnational innovations to rethink human rights and environmental law.

Biocultural Realities: The cases highlighted are grounded in the lived experiences of communities, aligning with—but also going beyond—international frameworks.

Transnational Solidarity: Addressing planetary crises (climate change, biodiversity loss, pollution) requires systemic solutions that advance human rights for present and future generations.

Case Studies: The submission features specific initiatives led by legal clinics, showcasing impactful, rights-based environmental advocacy.
