Thomas Spijkerboer is the Raoul Wallenberg Visiting Professor of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law in Lund since November 2017, in addition to being professor of migration law at his home base, the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. His research is about border deaths; gender and sexuality in asylum law; the crisis of European refugee law; illegalized refugees; and the role of courts in migration law.

Ongoing research projects
Thomas is developing an academic research network on migration and international/human rights law in Africa, the Middle East and Turkey. The network is to consist of academics from these countries working in these countries. By involving the RWI offices in Nairobi, Amman and Istanbul, he facilitate academic researchers from Africa, the Middle east and Turket to make their perspectives and priorities heard in international academic publications. The project will lead to a series of seminars in the countries concerned and publications in international academic fora.
