MILAMET Network Allows Senegalese Researchers To Pursue Their Own Research

Kick-off meeting for five Senegalese research projects on migration and international law

On Wednesday 22 April 2020, a meeting took place marking the kick-off of five Senegalese research projects on migration and international law. This initiative of the MILAMET network allows Senegalese researchers to pursue their own research agenda, instead of implementing a research agenda imposed by the global North.

The research projects seek to reverse the vector of research usually adopted in European research in this field, and to prioritise perspectives developed by Senegalese researchers from Senegalese perspectives.

The projects are:
  • Malado Agne (Institute of Human Rights and Peace, Cheikh Anta Diop University): Senegal in the context of the international regulation of migration: legal and political aspects of the reception of exogenous sources in the legal order
  • Abdou Khadre Diop (Online University of Senegal) : Cross-border pastoralism and the right to a nationality in West Africa: Which perspectives?
  • Ndeye Dieynaba Ndiaye (doctoral supervised by Olivier Delas (Laval University) and François Crépeau (McGill University), Québec, Canada ; Observatoire sur les migrations, l’asile et les apatrides) and Abdoulaye Faty (Online University of Senegal and Cheikh Anta Diop University; International University of Rabat ; Observatoire sur les migrations, l’asile et les apatrides): Refugee protection: towards a reform of asylum in Senegal
  • Hélène Quashie (Laboratory for Research on Economic and Social Transformation, IFAN/African Institute of Basic Research) : Migrants from the “North” in Senegal facing international and national legal norms: residence, work and mobilities
  • Abdourahmane Seck (Gaston Berger University, Groupe d’Action et d’étude critique) : Can Africa matter in the debate on migration and international law?

Several more meetings will take place during the year so as to nurture a collaborative research process, culminating in articles published in an academic journal.

The network on Migration and International Law in Africa, the Middle East and Turkey (MILAMET) consists of Naima Baba (law, Université Hassan II ; Casablanca, Morocco); Amanda Bisong (law, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nigeria); Jasmin Lilian Diab (international relations, law, American University Beirut, Lebanon); Papa Demba Fall (social sciences, Cheikh Anta Diop University, Dakar, Senegal); Meltem Ineli- Ciger (law, Süleyman Demire University, Isparta, Tuekry); Eleni Karageorgiou (law, Lund University); Thomas Spijkerboer (law, migration studies, Lund University/Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam).

The current programme focusing on Senegal is funded by the Dakar office of the Heinrich Böll Foundation (Germany). The MILAMET network has been financed by the Marianne and Marcus Wallenberg Foundation (Sweden).
