Breaking the cycle of statelessness in Cambodia

On December 14th RWI Cambodia brought together stakeholders from UN, OHCHR, UNESCAP, UNESCO, UNDP, various Cambodian CSOs, giz, faith based organisations, Sida, academia (including from the university of Ho Chi Minh City) and government consultants for the 3rd Roundtable Meeting on Statelessness in Cambodia. Good news is that the government has drafted a new Civil Registration Law that – if properly implemented – will end statelessness in Cambodia and ensure human rights for all.

Discussions revolved about detailed question of the law’s wording, possible implementation gaps and the way forward in the political debate of a very sensitive topic. RWI has been very instrumental in the past in bringing together people who would not necessarily be in contact to discuss legal aspects of this difficult human rights topic. With this new law, Cambodia has moved forward in reaching SDG 16.9 about the provision of legal registration (including birth certificates) for all.
