Book Launch: Climate Change, Disasters and Internal Displacement in Asia and the Pacific: A Human Rights-Based Approach

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute are happy to present Head of our                                                       Thematic area People on the Move  Dr. Matthew Scott‘s newly published book: Climate Change, Disasters and Internal Displacement in Asia and the Pacific: A Human Rights-Based Approach.

Internal displacement is the most common form of displacement globally. Asia and the Pacific region account for the majority of global disaster-related displacement.

However, the experience of the millions of individuals displaced differs according to several factors such as gender, age, ethnicity, (dis)ability, caste, and so forth. It is also dependent on the legal, administrative, social, and economic structures as well as the processes in place to support them.

This book examines how states in countries across Asia Pacific address internal displacement in the context of disasters and climate change.

Promoting a Human Rights Based Approach

The book adopts a human rights-based approach. The team of researchers investigate the role of law and policy in preventing displacement, protecting people who are displaced, and engendering durable solutions across case studies. The cases are drawn from and features challenges and specific situations from Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, the Philippines, Nepal, Bangladesh, Vanuatu, and the Solomon Islands.

The specific cases in the book also critically reflect on the term ‘displacement’ and the wider normative framework within which this phenomenon is conceptualised and addressed.

This book is the culmination of three years of collaborative research between academics from institutions in across Asia and the Pacific. It will be a useful source of knowledge to students, researchers, and practitioners working at the intersection of human rights, human mobility, development, disaster risk reduction and management, and climate change adaptation.
