“This Toxic Atmosphere Poisons Democracy”

The Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Dunja Mijatović, said that Europe is stuck in a roundabout during her speech at the Anna Lindh Lecture last week.

Ms. Mijatovic talked about the rise of intolerance in Europe. In particular, the lack of responsibility among politicians, spreading hate through speeches and amplifying prejudice against marginalized and vulnerable people.

It is more important than ever that we protect and promote the grounding idea that human rights are universal and indivisible. We must all work to defend not only our own rights, but those of others too.

Mijatovic was delivering the 15th annual Anna Lindh lecture in Lund, Sweden. Her speech was titled “The State of Human Rights in Europe: Forward and Back?”
