**About the Conference**
RWI is pleased to announce an upcoming international conference "Transitional Justice and Minorities in Afghanistan: Future Prospects and Comparative Experiences".

This event will bring together leading scholars, practitioners, and experts to critically examine the evolving human rights landscape in Afghanistan, with a particular focus on transitional justice and the protection of minorities.
The conference aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange, bridging academic research with practical solutions. By drawing on comparative experiences from other post-conflict societies, the conference will explore potential accountability mechanisms, transitional justice processes, and strategies for inclusion and minority protection in Afghanistan. We invite Afghan scholars and scholars specialized in Afghanistan, civil society representatives, and practitioners to apply.
**Conference overview and focus**
RWI is an independent academic institute that currently is implementing a human rights programme on Afghanistan (2024-2026) with the overall objective “to contribute to strengthened conditions for inclusive governance, peace, and respect for human rights and gender equality in Afghanistan”. In order to reach this objective, one particular result that the programme aims to achieve is to increase scholarship and academic discourse on the human rights situation in the country. Aligned with these goals, RWI is organizing a research conference that aims to explore key human rights issues related to the current situation in the country.

This conference will focus on transitional justice and minority rights in Afghanistan, examining the key human rights challenges at stake. While the primary emphasis will be on the Afghan context, comparative perspectives from other countries facing similar challenges will be explored to offer valuable insights and lessons.
Bringing together academics, researchers, and practitioners, the event will serve as a platform for critical discussions, the exchange of best practices, and the development of practical solutions for justice and inclusion in Afghanistan.
**Conference themes**
We welcome abstracts addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:
Transitional Justice in Afghanistan
– Truth-seeking, reparations, and reconciliation in post-conflict societies
– Accountability mechanisms for human rights violations
– Lessons from transitional justice efforts in other countries
Minority Rights and Inclusion
– The situation of ethnic, religious, and linguistic minorities under Taliban rule and/or from a historical perspective. This includes but it not limited to Hazara/Shia, Uzbek, Turkmen and Hindu/Sikh minorities.

**Participant eligibility**
This conference is open to Afghan scholars and practitioners, and experts specializing in Afghanistan, as well as those able to provide comparative perspectives on human rights issues affecting minorities and transitional justice processes from non-Afghan contexts.
**Submission guidelines**
We invite scholars, researchers, practitioners, and activists to submit abstracts for paper presentations addressing one (or more) of the themes outlined above. Abstracts should critically engage with the thematic focus area(s) and propose innovative approaches, empirical research, or theoretical insights.
– Abstract length: Max 300 words
– Biographical statement: Max 100 words (including affiliation and expertise)
– Indicate: Whether participation will be in-person or online. Please note that the organizers will prioritize in-person participation.

**Financial support**
The organizers will provide selected presenters with **Afghan nationality** financial support needed to participate in the conference. This support includes coverage of **travel expenses, accommodation**, and **per diem allowances** throughout the duration of the conference. Programme Associate (consultancy)
coordinate support to the Ukraine EU accession
The successful candidate will be coordinating a new RWI project that will support Ukraine’s EU accession process through human rights expertise for Chapter 23. The project will engage Ukraine’s Ministry of Justice with the support of multi-stakeholder partnerships, local perspectives and outreach on the national and EU levels.
The consultancy will be based in Kyiv, full time (40h per week). *T*he position is subject to the availability of funding for the initial period of April 2025- March 2026. The Programme Associate will report to our Regional Director Europe, based in Lund, Sweden.
**The Role as Programme Associate**
In this role, you will provide logistical and administrative support for the implementation of project activities. This includes making travel arrangements, identifying and booking venues, and coordinating communications with resource persons, participants, and partners. You will also handle administrative tasks such as sourcing and preparing equipment and materials, collecting and filing activity documentation, and summarising information for reports. Additional responsibilities include preparing periodic expenditure reports and assisting colleagues in ensuring compliance with donor and internal standards regarding procurement, financial rules, and reporting requirements.
You will play a key role in designing, delivering, and auditing project contracts while contributing to RWI’s broader operational practices. Identifying and developing improved methods and tools for finance and administration will be an essential part of your work. You will also be tasked with identifying, reporting, and mitigating risks that could jeopardise the project or RWI’s organisational reputation. Maintaining accurate records of expenditures, processing invoices and payments, and liaising with RWI’s Finance and Administration Department in Lund will also form part of your day-to-day responsibilities. Additionally, you will support the Regional Director Europe and the Programme Officer by performing other project-related duties as needed.
**Your Profile**
We are seeking candidates with a bachelor’s degree in a relevant field such as finance, administration, or related disciplines, and at least three years of professional experience in project administration, logistics, and support for development projects. You should have experience coordinating events, including travel arrangements, venue bookings, and managing participants or stakeholders. Strong organisational and time management skills, along with the ability to handle multiple tasks and priorities, are essential for this role.
A basic understanding of financial management, including budget monitoring and administrative tasks related to financial reporting, is required. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and familiarity with financial management systems are also necessary.
Fluency in both Ukrainian and English is essential.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong attention to detail and accuracy, the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a diverse team, and a proactive, solution-oriented approach to problem-solving. You should be comfortable working under pressure and meeting tight deadlines. A commitment to fostering a learning organisation and a willingness to share knowledge, combined with cultural sensitivity, are highly valued traits for this position.

Join RWI as an intern on Human Rights and the Environment
Explore the Intersection of HR and Environmental Protection
### Join Dr. Claudia Ituarte-Lima (RWI) and Dr. Ana Maria Vargas Falla (Lund Univeristy) at the RWI Research and Education department as an intern supporting the thematic area Human Rights and the Environment.
RWI is offering an exciting internship opportunity for the spring or fall of 2025 at our Lund headquarters. If the internship is part of your academic studies, such as a course, it can be full-time. Otherwise, it will be part-time, up to 50%.
Please note, this is an unpaid internship and RWI and Lund University is not responsible for visa applications or any related administrative procedures. Upon successful completion, the intern will be asked to write a brief report, and a certificate will be issued.
For this project, RWI and Lund University are in partnership with leading institutions from Belgium, Switzerland, The Netherlands, and Denmark, and have strong collaborations with Global South partners.
### Key Responsibilities
The RWI thematic area on human rights and the environment focuses on supporting legal and multi-disciplinary research, facilitating learning exchanges, and driving communications efforts. Our goal is to develop a comprehensive theoretical understanding and practical application of a human rights-based approach within climate change and biodiversity law and policy.
After an introductory training period, you will contribute to generating fresh insights into the role of biosphere defenders as agents of change in the implementation of law and policy. You’ll explore how these defenders trigger integrated responses to biodiversity stewardship and human well-being. Additionally, you will analyse how law and policy actors from both the Global South and Europe can support biosphere defenders in nature-based solutions and human rights for just sustainability transformations.
A key part of this internship involves contributing to the DEFEND-BIO transnational research project, focused on "Biosphere Defenders Leveraging Legal and Governance Tools for Just Sustainability Transformations."
**Main areas in focus will be:**
– Conduct research, reviews, and analysis on academic and policy reports related to human rights and the environment
– Collect, systematize, and analyse data on case studies, including mapping and analysing rights-based litigation related to the climate-biodiversity-water interface across various countries
– Contribute to the development of legal empowerment tools
– Participate in discussions on legal and governance innovations related to the right to a healthy environment and other human rights
– Develop outreach materials, such as news articles and blog posts, based on findings
### ✅ Requirements
Candidates should have a strong knowledge of international human rights and environmental law, and be currently pursuing or recently graduated from an LLM program in international human rights or a similar field. The ability to work independently, as well as collaboratively within a team, is essential. Fluency in written and spoken English is required, and knowledge of additional languages, particularly Spanish, would be an asset.
