born free and equal

Free and Equal? Human Rights Day

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights…”
These are the opening words to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights written 70 years ago next month.

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute is hosting an event celebrating the 70th anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights by the UN. War, death and destruction, caused partly by religious and ethnic hatred, was what encouraged the nations to together adopt this declaration in 1948.

Join this in-depth conversation around identity, religion, and ethnicity in cooperation with Open Skåne, Lund Cathedral and Lund municipality. Together we will commemorate Human Rights Day with discussion, music, and drama.

We’re bringing a diverse group of people together to have a thoughtful and respectful discussion around the differences that continue to keep us apart, to explore those frictions with courage and unpack areas of agreement. We believe solution-oriented dialogue can prevent conflict and divisions and in the end advance human rights, says Morten Kjaerum, director of the Raoul Wallenberg Institute.

Participants:

Nike Sandberg, spokesperson for the Afro-Swede Network in Skåne

Rebecca Lillian, Malmö-based rabbi working with interfaith dialogue

Kaoula Channoufi, representing the Islamic Association in Malmö

Lisa Svensson, Student Chaplain in Lund
