Sierra Leone’s Correctional Centres Working to Improve Treatment of Prisoners

The Raoul Wallenberg Institute’s Nairobi Office recently completed a two-day meeting for managers from all 16 of Sierra Leone’s correctional centres, as well as regional commanders and headquarters officers.

The event aimed to follow up on action plans developed at a workshop in May to increase compliance with the UN Standard Minimum Rules for the Treatment of Prisoners and other relevant international standards.

“While there is always room for further improvement, it was great to hear about some of the key achievements to date, in areas including family contact, medical examinations, disciplinary procedures and sanitation,” says Josh Ounsted, Director of RWI’s Nairobi office.
