The Raoul Wallenberg Institute is hosting a book launch and public seminar on April 4 to commemorate the publication of a new book, “Tracing the Roles of Soft Law in Human Rights.”
Soft law has always played an instrumental role in the field of human rights. Yet, this is the first volume to critically examine the role of soft law across a wide range of both established and emerging human rights regimes.
The book is edited by Stéphanie Lagoutte, Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen and John Cerone.
The book launch and seminar will feature Philip Alston, John Norton Pomeroy Professor of Law at New York University School of Law, and Reza Banakar, Professor and Director of Research at Sociology of Law, Lund University, as internal discussants.
Professor and Research Director at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen, and Stéphanie Lagoutte, Senior Researcher at the Danish Institute for Human Rights and PhD, will be joining the discussion as co-editors of the book. Contributing authour Dr Kasey McCall Smith from the University of Edinburgh will also be present to discuss her contribution to the book on interpreting international human rights standards.
About “Tracing The Roles of Soft Law in Human Rights”:
The book examines the roles of soft law in the international human rights regime using a broad range of case studies. It includes case studies on the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and on the regulation of armed conflict by soft law, two areas where soft law plays a paramount role in changing the reach of human rights protection.
The book analyses the role of soft law within human rights regimes where there are established hard law standards and also in emerging areas of international law where there is no substantial treaty codification of norms.
The book is edited by Stéphanie Lagoutte, Thomas Gammeltoft-Hansen and John Cerone and published by Oxford University Press.
