Istanbul University’s International Crime and Punishment Film Festival

“Discrimination Limits a Person’s Basic Freedoms in Everyday Life”

RWI’s Director Morten Kjaerum traveled to Istanbul over the weekend  to speak at Istanbul University’s International Crime and Punishment Film Festival.

The festival’s theme this year is discrimination based on race, ethnicity and religion.

In his address, Kjaerum spoke about how discrimination limits a person’s basic freedoms in everyday life. He said discrimination, including hate crime, of ethnic and religious minorities in Europe undermines their trust in the system and the authorities.

He also drew attention to the discriminiation against LGBTI people around the world.

During the 6-day long International Crime and Punishment Film Festival, the worlds of academia and cinema come together to discuss issues around justice and discrimination. Film directors, artists, academics, students, and representatives from NGOs participate in the festival. And human rights films and documentaries are shown throughout Istanbul.
