In early March, Ukrainian TV broadcaster Hromadske International interviewed Lyal S. Sunga, Visiting Professor at the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, on the case Ukraine brought before the International Court of Justice in The Hague, Netherlands against the Russian Federation.
Ukraine requests the ICJ to issue provisional measures to ensure that Russia abides by its international obligations not to finance terrorism in relation to the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic and Lugansk People’s Republic, and to fulfill its international legal obligations under the UN Convention against Racial Discrimination with respect to people in the territory of the Crimean peninsula.
“The purpose of provisional measures is to preserve the rights of parties pending judicial resolution of a dispute and to ensure no further deterioration in a situation,” Sunga says.
