The preparation for RWI’s Training of Trainers programme started in 2008 with the selection of participants from governmental, non-governmental, national human rights institutions and academic institutions, followed by a three-day planning workshop in Alexandria, Egypt.

The designed ToT-programme was included in RWI’s proposal for a three-year regional programme, entitled “Building Human Rights Knowledge and Resources in the Middle East and North Africa”, approved for funding by Sida in November 2009.

The aim is that the participants in the ToT-programme will become Master Trainers in Human Rights with an in-depth knowledge of human rights issues that could through the use of Arabic language be transferred to individuals and institutions in Arab societies, in order to enhance the promotion and protection of human rights.

During 2010 and 2011 two workshops focusing on both human rights theory and practice, including training techniques and methodology were carried out in Aqaba, Jordan, and Lund, Sweden. During the same years several participants took the opportunity to participate in human rights education and programmes with financial support provided by RWI. Participants also worked as co-trainers and facilitators in trainings and workshops organised by RWI and other actors, mainly in the MENA region, and four of the participants took the opportunity during 2011to use the mentoring possibility provided by the expert on ToT that RWI has contracted for this programme.

6-10 May 2012, the final workshop in the programme will be organised in Amman, Jordan. Participants will receive further advanced training on training methodology and will put it into practice by facilitating sessions on areas of choice for target groups from various NGOs and institutions in Amman.
